Expectations

Last night
I dreamed a dream
It was of you
You and me
You with me…
We are happy
Like we had walked off into the sunset
At the end of some fairy tale
We are with child
The boy I had wanted to give you
We’re filtering through paperwork and baby registries
Like a terrified, excited, expecting couple
The fiction I had hoped for takes shape
It is the future you feared
The one that separated you from me
When I wake, I am confused
I feel you in and around me
I soon realize it was not real
You are not next to me
I curse my subconscious
For reminding me that my only expectation
Should be empty sheets
